Program Overview

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation offers a scholarship to foreign students who study, or plan to study, in a Japanese graduate school for a master's or doctoral degree. All nationalities and research fields are welcome. You can apply from abroad if you have been accepted by a Japanese graduate school, and you apply directly to the foundation without pre-selection by your university. The scholarship pays 230,000 yen a month for a degree of 1 to 2 years, 210,000 yen a month for a 3-year degree and 180,000 yen a month for a degree longer than 3 years, for the minimum period needed to finish the degree. It does not cover university tuition fees or your first travel to Japan, so it is shown here as partial funding. The interview is held in Japanese and the research plan must be written in Japanese (you may add an English version), so you need working Japanese to apply. The application period is 1 September (from 11:00 Japan time) to 31 October 2026. About ten students are selected through document screening and interviews. Document results are announced on 31 January 2027, interviews are planned for 9 February 2027 in Tokyo or by video call, and final results are announced on 31 March 2027. This page was last checked against the foundation's website on 7 October 2026.
