Program Overview

Knight-Hennessy Scholars funds up to three years of graduate study in any Stanford graduate programme, including master's, PhD, MBA, JD and MD degrees, and adds a leadership development programme. There are no quotas by region, university, field of study or career aspiration. The application for the 2027 cohort opened on 1 June 2026 and closed on 6 October 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Applicants must also apply separately to a Stanford graduate programme by that programme's deadline (no later than 1 December 2026 to remain eligible). The deadline is very close, so only apply if your application is nearly ready. Update, 8 October 2026: the application for the 2027 cohort is now closed. It closed on 6 October 2026 at 1:00 pm Pacific Time. Stanford will tell finalists on 27 January 2027 and scholars on 16 March 2027. The opening date for the 2028 cohort is not announced yet. For the 2027 cohort, applicants needed a bachelor's degree earned in January 2020 or later (January 2018 or later with military service). Knight-Hennessy has no application fee of its own, but most Stanford degree programmes charge one. Funding details, checked 8 October 2026 on the official Funding page: in each of the first three years, scholars receive a fellowship that pays tuition and associated fees, a stipend for living and academic costs (such as room and board, books, supplies and local transport), and a travel stipend for one economy-class return trip to Stanford a year. New scholars also get a one-time relocation stipend. For degrees longer than three years, such as a PhD or MD, the Stanford department funds the later years under its own standard commitment. Stipends are taxable, and Knight-Hennessy does not pay scholars' taxes.
