Program Overview

Kochi University of Technology (KUT) runs the Special Scholarship Program (SSP), a three-year doctoral programme in its Graduate School of Engineering. Each year KUT enrols about 15 selected doctoral students, who work on research projects with a host professor for the whole three years. Graduates receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering or a Doctor of Philosophy, depending on the research field. KUT lists the research projects and professors who can host SSP students, and applicants apply for a specific project. Application periods are set for each enrolment, so no date is shown here. The financial support is described in KUT's programme outline. This page was last checked against the official website on 6 October 2026. Checked on 7 October 2026 against the Kochi University of Technology website: application documents must arrive at the university by post by 16 October 2026 for enrolment in April 2027 and for the first round of October 2027 enrolment, and by 9 April 2027 for the second round of October 2027 enrolment. You need permission from an SSP supervisor before you apply, and the university recommends sending the online pre-application at least 8 weeks before the deadline. The scholarship pays 150,000 yen a month for 3 years and exempts the examination, enrolment and tuition fees. Housing costs are not covered. Applicants should be 35 or younger at enrolment.
