Program Overview

International students at the University of Tokyo can be funded through the Japanese government MEXT scholarship (embassy or university recommendation) and through university fellowships for selected English-taught graduate programmes. Many English-taught programmes have application windows from late 2026 for entry in autumn 2027, and funding applications are usually made at the same time; the date below is an estimate, as each programme sets its own dates. Checked on 8 October 2026 against University of Tokyo pages: the university lists the MEXT Scholarship, the MEXT Honors Scholarship, the University of Tokyo Fellowship (Special Scholarship for International Students), a scholarship for PEAK students and private scholarships. There is no single university deadline. Each graduate school sets its own dates, which can be earlier than the MEXT deadline, so the date shown on this page is only an estimate. You apply for admission to the graduate school first and then submit scholarship documents through that school. The University of Tokyo Fellowship is a stipend (150,000 or 200,000 yen a month on official pages) and does not include a tuition exemption.
