Program Overview

The Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarship is a fully funded PhD award from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK, for UK and overseas students starting the first year of a research degree in the 2027-2028 academic session. Each scholarship covers the University tuition fee and pays a stipend equivalent to the UKRI rate, which is 21,805 pounds a year for 2026-2027. Awards last between three and four years, as agreed by the School or College, and are pro-rata for part-time study. Around 26 scholarships are offered: one in most Schools, three in Geosciences and six in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Selection is based on outstanding academic merit and research potential. You need, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 honours degree or the international equivalent, and your financial status, nationality and field of study are not taken into account. The University does not generally consider candidates who already hold a PhD. You must apply for admission to a full-time or part-time PhD at Edinburgh first. For Schools in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and for Engineering, Geosciences, Chemistry and Mathematics, you then complete an online scholarship application in EUCLID through MyEd, using your University User Name (UUN). Applicants to Informatics and Physics and Astronomy are considered automatically when they apply for admission, and Biological Sciences applicants apply through the School. Access to the scholarship system can take up to five working days after your admission application. Closing dates are 23:59 UK time and vary by School: 16 November 2026 for Biological Sciences, 30 November 2026 for Informatics, 4 or 22 January 2027 for Physics and Astronomy, 11 January 2027 for Chemistry, 14 January 2027 for Engineering, 25 January 2027 for Geosciences, 1 February 2027 for Mathematics, and 2 February 2027 for the Business School, Economics and the Schools in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The date for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is to be confirmed. Late applications are not accepted, and shortlisted candidates are invited to an interview.
