Program Overview

Ghent University in Belgium offers Special Research Fund (BOF) Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South. They fund a 48-month sandwich PhD: the candidate spends research periods at Ghent University and at a partner institution in their home region, and earns a PhD (or joint PhD) from Ghent. Ghent funds about 15 of these scholarships each year. Ghent University pays for the 24 months of research carried out in Ghent. The Ghent supervisor also receives a bench fee of 310 euros for each month of research in Ghent, and there is a travel budget of 8,000 euros for operational costs and part of the travel of the student and both supervisors. The partner institution must fund the other 24 months, through a full-time local PhD scholarship or salary. The stipend amount for the Ghent months is not stated on the official call page. Candidates must come from, and hold the nationality of, a country on Ghent's Global South country list. The application is prepared jointly by the candidate, a Ghent University supervisor and a supervisor at the partner institution. The closing date for the 2027 call is 9 February 2027, and requests for exceptions are due by 15 January 2027. Results are published from 12 May 2027, and the scholarship starts on 1 October 2027. This page was last checked against the Ghent University website on 21 October 2026.
