Program Overview

The Eric Bleumink Fellowship is a fully funded University of Groningen scholarship for talented students from developing countries who want to take a Master's degree in the Netherlands. You cannot apply for it directly: the Admissions Office and the faculty admission boards nominate suitable candidates from Master's applicants. To be considered for programmes starting in September 2027, complete your Master's application before 1 December 2026. The grant covers the tuition fee, international travel, subsistence, books and health insurance for a one-year or two-year Master's programme starting in September. The fellowship's rules and regulations list a living allowance of 1,250 euros a month, a settling allowance of 275 euros, a study allowance of 310 euros a year for books, payment of the Master's tuition fees, economy return flights and insurance arranged through the university. The rules say the fellowship receives hundreds of applications each year and only four are awarded. Candidates must hold the nationality of one of the eligible countries listed by the university, which include Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt and many more. They also need a provisional or unconditional admission offer for a Groningen Master's before February, excellent bachelor's grades, excellent English that meets their programme's admission requirements, good health, availability for the whole programme and no other means of financing the study. Any other University of Groningen scholarship offered at the same time cannot be combined with it. Nominees are informed before 1 February and are asked to send a fellowship motivation letter to the Admissions Office within one week. The selection committee looks at how the candidate's education will strengthen scientific capacity in their home country, links with universities there, gender balance, a range of disciplines and regions, and motivation, including other funding requests. All nominees hear the outcome before 1 March. If you have not been contacted by 1 February, you were not nominated. Last checked on 30 October 2026 against the University of Groningen Eric Bleumink Fellowship page, the Eric Bleumink Fund applying for a grant page and the Eric Bleumink Fellowship Talent Grant rules and regulations (updated November 2024).
