Program Overview

The Ertegun Scholarship (the Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities) is a fully funded award at the University of Oxford in the UK for outstanding graduate students in the humanities. It is open to students from all countries and all backgrounds, including UK students, who are starting a new full-time Master's or DPhil course in an eligible Humanities subject for entry in the 2027-28 academic year. Oxford says it chooses the very best students who will one day become leaders in their fields. Every Ertegun Scholarship covers course fees in full. Scholars also receive a generous annual grant for living costs (the rate for 2026-27 is £21,805; the 2027-28 rate is not stated on the official website), which is normally enough for a single student living in Oxford. Scholars have dedicated use of Ertegun House, with space for writing and research and a programme of social occasions, lectures and performances. The award runs for the full duration of your fee liability, and on courses longer than one year it is renewed each year based on satisfactory academic progress. You can apply if your course is run by the Humanities Division and its faculties: Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Classics, English, Fine Art (DPhil in Contemporary Art History and Theory only), History, Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, Medieval and Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, Theology and Religion, and interdisciplinary courses such as Celtic Studies, Medieval Studies, Film Aesthetics and Digital Scholarship. A few courses in Classical Archaeology and the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies also qualify. Only courses on the official list are eligible, part-time courses are not, and the scholarship cannot be held with any other award. There is no separate scholarship form. You apply for your Oxford course, select the Ertegun scholarship in the funding section of the Graduate Application Form, and upload the Ertegun supporting statement (three questions about the programme's mission) as a PDF. Submit by your course's early January deadline: 12:00 midday UK time on Tuesday 5 January 2027 for many eligible courses, such as the DPhil in English and the BPhil in Philosophy, or Thursday 7 January 2027 for others, such as the DPhil in History. The competition is intense, with over 1,500 applicants for around 15 awards a year. First offers are expected by the end of March and selection should be finished by the end of April. Last checked on 25 October 2026 against the Ertegun Programme scholarships page, the 2027 entry supporting statement, the list of eligible courses, Oxford's A-Z of scholarships and Oxford's 2027-28 course pages.

How Applications Are Evaluated

Each scholarship provider uses its own selection criteria. Applicants should review the official scholarship guidelines for the specific criteria used to evaluate applications.

Selection information published by the provider

  • Faculties first identify shortlisted candidates and nominate them to the Ertegun Scholarships Selection Committee
  • Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a faculty representative, usually by videoconference or telephone, to expand on their supporting statement
  • The Selection Committee (Head of the Humanities Division plus one representative from each eligible faculty, consulting the Board of Ertegun Overseers) considers the supporting statement together with the course application
  • The aim is to choose the very best students who will realise Mica Ertegun's mission and become leaders in their fields
  • Successful candidates are notified by email; unsuccessful applicants are not contacted individually and no feedback is given
