Program Overview

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the best-known international postgraduate awards in the world. It was set up in 2000 with a donation from the Gates Foundation, and it funds outstanding applicants from any country outside the United Kingdom to study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge. Gates Cambridge offers around 70 full-cost scholarships each year, and about two-thirds of them go to PhD students. Scholars are chosen for outstanding intellectual ability, their reasons for choosing the course, a commitment to improving the lives of others and leadership potential. Applications for 2027–28 entry opened on 11 September 2026. US citizens living in the USA apply in the US round by 14 October 2026. All other applicants, including applicants from Pakistan, apply by 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on the course. Every deadline is at 11:59 pm UK time. Check the funding deadline for your course in the Cambridge Course Directory. There is no separate Gates Cambridge form: you apply inside the University of Cambridge postgraduate application. This page was last checked against the Gates Cambridge website on 7 October 2026. Last checked 8 October 2026 against Gates Cambridge and University of Cambridge pages: the deadline is 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 at 11:59 pm UK time, depending on your course. To see which one applies, open your course in the Cambridge Course Directory and read the Course Funding Deadline. Applicants hear the outcome by 8 March 2027, selection panels meet on 22 and 23 March 2027, and offers are made by early April. The Cambridge application fee is 20 pounds for doctoral courses and 85 pounds for other postgraduate courses. Pakistan is not on the list of countries with an automatic fee waiver, so applicants from Pakistan pay the fee.
