The JUSTCOOL PhD scholarship programme (official name JUSTCOOL: PhD) is a joint doctoral admission for international students at three universities in Shanghai: Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Tongji University. The full name is Joint Examinations and Admissions for International Students to Top Chinese Universities: PhD Program. It covers four subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. The programme plans to enrol no more than 90 students in 2027, with 20 to 40 at each university. It is open to students of any nationality except Chinese who are finishing a bachelor's degree. You must be an undergraduate student majoring in one of the four subjects, receive your bachelor's degree between June 2026 and July 2027, and rank in the top 20% of your major at your home university. For English, you need one of these: you are a citizen of an English-speaking country and English is your first language, your bachelor's degree was taught entirely in English, or you have IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo English Test 110 or PTE Academic 61 from the last two years. Teaching is in English. The funding listed on the official admissions page is the JUSTCOOL: PhD fellowship, a full tuition waiver, free accommodation, a research or teaching assistantship and free medical insurance. The fellowship amount is not stated on the official source. Applications opened on 28 September 2026 and close on 14 November 2026. Shortlisted applicants sit a written exam on 12 December 2026, which is planned to be held online. Interviews are in January 2027, admission notices come in February 2027, and studies begin in the spring or autumn semester of 2027. You choose your university after the interview. Not stated on the official source: an application fee, an age limit, the length of the programme, and whether holders of a master's degree can apply.
