Program Overview

The Sanger PhD Programme is the Wellcome Sanger Institute's fully funded 4-year PhD in genomics, open to students of every nationality. Applications for the 2027 intake are open now and close on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 09:00 GMT. Students on the programme are registered with the University of Cambridge, become members of a Cambridge College and are awarded a University of Cambridge PhD. Students offered one of the programme's funded studentships receive full financial support, including University tuition fees, regardless of nationality. For international students, visa and immigration health surcharge costs are reimbursed. The tax-free stipend as of October 2026 is 25,649 pounds a year in the first year, rising to 26,228, 26,806 and 27,385 pounds in years two to four. The Institute says there are at least 12 funded studentships. Students apply to the programme rather than to a specific supervisor. The first eight months are spent on three rotation projects in different research groups, including at least one computational and one experimental rotation, before the student chooses a PhD laboratory by mutual agreement with a supervisor. The next intake starts on 1 October 2027. Applicants should hold, or be about to achieve, a first or good 2:1 degree or an equivalent overseas qualification. Non-native English speakers must meet the University of Cambridge English requirements, but only after a place is offered. You apply through the Institute's online form with short written answers, three chosen potential supervisors, two academic referees and your transcripts. There is no fee to apply to the Sanger programme. Referees must submit their references by 1 December 2026 at 09:00 GMT, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed on 25 January 2027. Last checked on 30 October 2026 against the Wellcome Sanger Institute 4-Year PhD Programme page, its application process and FAQ page, and the Sanger Institute PhD programmes page.
