Sanger PhD Application 2027: Fully Funded Genomics PhD, Eligibility, Form Questions and Deadline

Your Sanger PhD application can lead to one of the best-funded genomics doctorates in the world: four years at the Wellcome Sanger Institute near Cambridge, a University of Cambridge PhD, and full funding for students of every nationality. Applications for the 2027 intake close on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 09:00 GMT. This guide covers the funding, who can apply, every question on the form and what happens at interview. The key facts are also on our Sanger PhD Programme 2027 listing.

We checked every detail on 30 October 2026 against the Sanger Institute’s official 4-Year PhD Programme page and its application process and FAQ page. Dates and stipend rates can change, so confirm them on the official pages before you submit.

What the studentship pays

Every student offered one of the funded studentships receives full financial support, including University tuition fees, whatever their nationality. That matters for international students, because overseas fees are usually the biggest barrier to a UK PhD. The Institute also reimburses visa and immigration health surcharge (IHS) costs for international students.

YearTax-free stipend (rates as of October 2026)
Year 1£25,649
Year 2£26,228
Year 3£26,806
Year 4£27,385

Students are registered with the University of Cambridge and become members of a Cambridge College, which gives access to University departments, courses, libraries and the careers service. Each student has a Sanger supervisor, a Cambridge co-supervisor (academic adviser) and a thesis committee that meets at least once a year.

How the four years work

You apply to the programme, not to one supervisor. In the first eight months you complete three rotation projects in different research groups, and at least one must be computational and one experimental. You write a short report or prepare a poster and present to the group at the end of each rotation. You then choose your PhD laboratory by mutual consent with a supervisor during the third rotation.

Research at the Institute is organised into six scientific programmes: Cellular Genomics, Generative Genomics, Human Genetics, Parasites and Microbes, Somatic Genomics and Tree of Life. Students are expected to submit their thesis within the four years and give a formal Institute seminar at the end.

Who can apply

  • Any nationality. The programme is open to overseas applicants and funding does not depend on where you are from.
  • A strong degree. You should hold, or be about to achieve, a first or a good 2:1 class degree, or an equivalent overseas qualification.
  • English. If English is not your first language you must meet the University of Cambridge English requirements, but only before admission, not when you apply.
  • Available from 1 October 2027. That is when the next intake starts.
  • Own funding is not a shortcut. Students with external studentships still apply in the usual way and go through the same selection.

What the application form asks

The form is short but every answer has a word limit, so plan your text before you start. You will need to:

  • give personal details and your academic qualifications (post-16 school and higher education) and language skills;
  • optionally list academic awards and prizes with context (100 words);
  • explain your motivation for a PhD and why the Sanger programme fits your goals (150 words);
  • pick three potential supervisors from the dropdown list and explain your research interests and why their work appeals to you (200 words);
  • show how your studies and experience relate to your interests, with key technical skills (150 words);
  • describe up to three periods of research or work experience (120 words each), including your role, results and skills;
  • optionally list publications, preprints and presentations;
  • describe experiences beyond your studies that shaped you (150 words);
  • give two academic referees and upload your transcripts as a PDF; and
  • complete the Equal Opportunities Monitoring form.

The Institute asks that your answers genuinely reflect your own motivations and experience and says you should not submit AI-generated content as your own. Our research CV guide and advice on recommendation letters will help you prepare.

How to apply step by step

  1. Explore the supervisors. Read the potential supervisors page and shortlist three people whose work excites you.
  2. Get your transcripts. Request them from your university in a form you can upload as a PDF. Current students upload marks so far.
  3. Ask two referees. Use their institutional email addresses and get their agreement first.
  4. Draft your answers offline within the word limits, then fill in the online form. Bookmark the unique URL after page one so you can come back.
  5. Submit by 24 November 2026, 09:00 GMT and check for the confirmation email.
  6. Chase your references so both arrive by 1 December 2026, 09:00 GMT.
  7. If you are offered a place, apply for admission to the University of Cambridge through its Applicant Portal.

Interviews and selection

Shortlisted candidates are invited to the interview day on 25 January 2027, planned in person. It includes two interviews with individual faculty members or senior scientists and one panel interview with three of them. If you cannot attend, you can be interviewed by videoconference during the preceding two weeks. Funded studentships are allocated competitively after the interviews.

Tips for a strong application

  • Be specific about supervisors. Name the questions in their work that interest you, not just the topic.
  • Show both sides of genomics. Since rotations include computational and lab work, mention any coding or data skills alongside bench experience.
  • Use the experience boxes well. Describe your own contribution and what you learned, with a concrete result.
  • Write in your own voice. The Institute explicitly warns against AI-generated answers.
