Program Overview

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) is the University of Amsterdam's scholarship for outstanding students from outside the EU/EEA who plan to do a master's programme at the university. Students who hold a non-EU/EEA passport and have applied for a degree programme at the University of Amsterdam can apply. This page used to describe the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES), an award of about 25,000 euros. That scholarship is no longer listed on the university's master's scholarships page, which now lists the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship and separate faculty scholarships. The amount, the eligibility rules and the deadline of the AMS differ for each faculty or graduate school, so no single amount is shown here and the deadline below is only an estimate. Find the rules for your programme on the website of your faculty or graduate school. This page was last checked against the University of Amsterdam website on 7 October 2026.
