Studying in Turkey: what to know before you apply
Language
Türkiye Bursları scholars take a one-year Turkish language course before their degree, unless they already have the required level. Some universities, including Boğaziçi and METU, teach mainly in English, and they ask for proof of English for their programmes. Check the language of each programme when you choose it in the application.
How placement works
You do not apply to universities separately. Inside the scholarship application you list the universities and programmes you want, and if you are selected you are placed in one of them. Your choices should follow from what you studied before, because the reviewers check that your preferences are consistent.
What the scholarship pays
The scholarship covers tuition, a monthly stipend, accommodation, health insurance and a return flight, as well as the Turkish course. This makes it one of the more complete awards for students who cannot pay any costs themselves.
The interview
Shortlisted candidates are interviewed, usually in their own country or online. The interview covers your academic knowledge and career goals, so be ready to explain your subject, why you chose Turkey and what you plan to do afterwards.
Choosing between Boğaziçi and METU
Both are among the best-known universities in Turkey and both teach in English. Boğaziçi is in Istanbul and METU is in Ankara. Compare the departments and research in your field at each one, and list the programmes that fit your background best. You can include both in your choices.
Getting your documents ready
The application is made online, and you upload your transcripts, diploma, passport copy, letter of intent and, for master’s and PhD study, reference letters. Scan original documents clearly and check that every page is readable. If your documents are not in Turkish or English, prepare certified translations. The application window is short, usually about six weeks from mid-January, so have everything ready before it opens.
Who this scholarship suits
Türkiye Bursları suits students with good grades who meet the age limits, have taken part in social or volunteer activities and can write a clear letter of intent. See our full guide to the application for the selection stages.
