How scholarships work in Germany

Public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition for most programmes, so scholarships there mainly help with living costs. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest funder, with programmes for master's students, working professionals and doctoral researchers. Universities also award the Deutschlandstipendium, a merit grant for enrolled students.
