Program Overview

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) gives scholarships for university summer courses in Germany. The courses teach German language, regional studies or technical German at state or state-recognised universities and their language schools. They are taught in German only. The scholarship is a one-time payment of €1,134, or €1,309 for students from Least Developed Countries. Most students also get a travel allowance based on their country (not for Western Europe), plus health, accident and personal liability insurance. Course fees and accommodation are usually taken directly from the grant by the course provider, so you may receive only what is left. Courses last at least 18 teaching days with at least 25 teaching hours a week, and usually run between June and September. The grant cannot be extended. You can apply if you are a bachelor's student who has finished at least two years of study, or a master's student, in any subject. You must be enrolled at a university outside Germany, in a country covered by the programme, when you apply and during the course. You must be at least 18 when the course starts and prove your German level with a certificate such as TestDaF, Goethe-Zertifikat, DSH or telc Deutsch. At least two years must have passed since any earlier DAAD summer or winter course grant. Applications for summer 2027 courses opened on 15 September 2026 in the DAAD Portal. You choose three different course locations. The closing date is 1 December 2026. Selection is based mainly on your academic results and your motivation letter. Check that your country is covered in the DAAD scholarship database before you apply. Last checked on 15 October 2026 against the official DAAD scholarship database entry for University Summer Courses.
