Program Overview

The University of Erfurt in Germany is offering up to four doctoral scholarships under the Thuringian State Graduate Support scheme. Funding starts on 1 April 2027. Each scholarship pays €1,400 a month for three years, and a fourth year is possible on request. Scholars with children receive a family allowance of €300 a month for the first child and €150 for each extra child. Up to €600 a year is also available for research materials and travel, on request. The scholarships support doctoral projects within the Erfurt Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programme (EPPP), at one of the University's certified Graduate Centres or at the Max-Weber-Kolleg. You may apply to only one Graduate Centre or the Max-Weber-Kolleg. You need a master's degree (or a Diploma or Magister) with above-average results. By the start of funding you must be accepted as a doctoral candidate by an Erfurt faculty or the Max-Weber-Kolleg, enrolled at the University, a full member of your Graduate Centre or the Max-Weber-Kolleg, and have health insurance. You cannot hold other public funding for the same purpose. The call does not state any nationality restriction. You send all documents as one PDF by email to graduiertenfoerderung@uni-erfurt.de. A professor must send a recommendation letter separately. The closing date is 24 November 2026, and decisions are expected by the end of February 2027. Some forms are in German only, and certificates and thesis summaries must be in German or English. Last checked on 15 October 2026 against the University of Erfurt's official call for applications and announcements page.
