Program Overview

The Science@Leuven Scholarship is a merit award from the Faculty of Science at KU Leuven in Belgium for talented international students who want to start a Master's degree in the 2027-2028 academic year. It pays an allowance of 12,000 euros per academic year for up to two consecutive years, with the second year awarded if you perform well in the first year of your Master's. Students from outside the EEA also receive a partial tuition fee waiver. The scholarship is financed by the Science@Leuven Fund, and applications for 2027-2028 opened on 1 October 2026. With the fee waiver, non-EEA scholarship holders paid a tuition fee of 3,252.72 euros in 2026-2027, whatever programme they chose; KU Leuven has not yet decided the amount for 2027-2028. EEA students receive the allowance but no extra fee waiver. The number of scholarships changes every year depending on the funds available, and one named scholarship is reserved for the Master of Geography. The scholarship is open to all nationalities except Belgian, for the Master's programmes in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Biology, Biophysics Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Data Science, and Sustainable Development. You need excellent results, comparable to at least Distinction at KU Leuven, a Bachelor's degree from a non-Belgian university, and very good English: TOEFL iBT 94 or IELTS 7.0 with the required subscores. You must not have studied or worked at KU Leuven before, must not already hold a Master's or PhD, and must be willing to act as an ambassador for your programme. To apply, you first submit your Master's application in the KU Leuven application tool and upload the required documents, including a transcript with ECTS credits, a short description of your most relevant courses, two reference letters and a motivation letter. You then register for the Science@Leuven Scholarship with the application confirmation email before 15 February 2027. You do not need to wait for admission, but only admitted students are considered. About eight shortlisted candidates are interviewed online in April 2027, and awards are announced at the beginning of May 2027. Last checked on 28 October 2026 against the KU Leuven pages: Science@Leuven Scholarship 2027-2028, Science@Leuven Scholarship timepath, the Science@Leuven scholarship registration form and Application instructions for degree students.
