Program Overview

The University of Sheffield in the UK offers four fully funded PhD studentships a year in the arts and humanities through the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA), linked to the AHRC North/Northwest Hub. They are for new PhD students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities: the School of English; the School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities; the School of Languages, Arts and Societies; and the School of Law. Each studentship lasts 3.5 years (pro rata for part-time study). It pays tuition fees at the home or international rate, as applicable, and a stipend at the UKRI rate, given as 21,805 pounds for 2026/27. Up to one of the four studentships may go to an outstanding international candidate, and Sheffield warns that competition for that place will be particularly intense. Candidates already enrolled on a PhD cannot apply. There are two steps. First, submit a PhD study application through the university's online portal by 14 December 2026. Then submit the funding application by 19 February 2027, using the application number from your study application. A faculty panel meets in March 2027, and Sheffield aims to tell candidates the outcome by the end of March 2027. This page was last checked against the University of Sheffield website on 21 October 2026.
