Program Overview

Internews' Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering in-person reporting fellowships for journalists to cover the first Conference of the Parties (COP1) of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction agreement, also called the High Seas Treaty, in New York City. The conference runs from 11 to 22 January 2027. Fellows arrive on 9 January, join an orientation day on 10 January and leave on 23 January 2027. EJN plans to select 10 fellows, with equal representation from the Global North and Global South. The programme depends on final funding approval from the Bloomberg Ocean Fund. EJN covers economy airfare, accommodation and meals, travel medical insurance, ground transport, visa cost reimbursement, press accreditation support and a daily allowance in New York. Fellows also get a pre-conference virtual workshop, briefings with ocean experts and daily support from media trainers. Applicants must be professional journalists working for or representing an established media house in a coastal country, with experience reporting on ocean issues, good English and a letter of support from an editor. Freelancers can apply with a letter from the outlet they will report for. Fellows must publish at least two in-depth stories. The closing date is 27 October 2026, and decisions are expected in November 2026. This page was last checked against the Earth Journalism Network website on 21 October 2026.
