Program Overview

The International Selection of the École normale supérieure (ENS-PSL) in Paris admits students from universities outside France into a three-year programme. Students complete a master's degree in their discipline and earn the ENS graduate diploma (DENS) at the same time. Selected students receive a grant of €1,000 a month for 36 months and a furnished room on an ENS-PSL campus. The ENS FAQ says a room is not guaranteed in the third year, and students pay the university registration fees. There are two tracks. Arts & Humanities covers 18 disciplines, including anthropology, economics, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy and sociology. Sciences covers 7: biology, chemistry, earth science, computer science, mathematics, physics and cognitive sciences. You choose one discipline. You apply while in the third year of a bachelor's degree or the first year of a master's. You must be under 26 on the day applications open and must never have applied to the International Selection before. Each track also has its own rules on how many years you have studied at a foreign university and how long you have lived or studied in France. Applications for the 2027 session are open from 16 October to 15 December 2026 on the OnePSL30 platform. Shortlists are published from 21 January 2027 for Arts & Humanities and from 27 January 2027 for Sciences. Tests are held by videoconference in February and March 2027, and results come from 9 March 2027 (Arts & Humanities) and 26 March 2027 (Sciences). Arts & Humanities candidates take a written exam in French, an oral exam and an interview, so good French is strongly recommended. Sciences candidates take a scientific oral test and an interview, and may answer in French or English. ENS says between 5% and 10% of applicants are selected in most years. Last checked on 15 October 2026 against the official ENS-PSL International Selection page and FAQ.

Guides for this scholarship

How Applications Are Evaluated

Each scholarship provider uses its own selection criteria. Applicants should review the official scholarship guidelines for the specific criteria used to evaluate applications.

Selection information published by the provider

  • Step 1: the jury shortlists candidates from the application file
  • Arts & Humanities: a written exam in French in your discipline, an oral exam before a panel and a 20 to 30 minute interview about your background and project
  • Sciences: a scientific oral test in your discipline (it may include a written preparation part) and an interview about your scientific culture and motivation; the scientific test counts twice as much as the interview
  • The marks from the tests decide the list of admitted students
