Program Overview

The NIMS Internship Program lets undergraduate and graduate students do research for up to 90 days at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan. Students from universities in Japan and abroad can take part. NIMS says it accepts about 100 students from around the world each year. Selected interns receive a daily allowance and their accommodation fees, not including utilities. NIMS does not give the allowance amount and does not say that flights or insurance are covered, so we list this as a partially funded internship. The 2026 round has closed. NIMS says the next application round is scheduled to open in December 2026. A closing date has not been published yet. You do not apply to NIMS directly. First find a host researcher in the NIMS SAMURAI researcher directory and contact one researcher at a time. Send that researcher, in English, the NIMS student application form, your CV, an enrolment certificate issued within the last three months, and your official transcripts. Master's and PhD students send both undergraduate and graduate transcripts. If the researcher agrees to host you, the researcher submits your documents to NIMS and may ask your supervisor for a reference letter. The researcher tells you the result, and you agree your start and end dates together. Students who already hold a MEXT, JSPS or JST scholarship should check with their scholarship provider before applying. Last checked on 15 October 2026 against the official NIMS Internship Program page.
