What is the Gates Cambridge Scholarship?
Gates Cambridge is not only an academic award. The programme looks for people who are outstanding in their subject and who also want to use their education to improve the lives of others. Scholars join a community of students from many countries and fields.
What does the Gates Cambridge Scholarship cover?
The scholarship pays the full University Composition Fee and a maintenance allowance for a single student. The allowance is 23,152 pounds for 12 months at the 2026–27 rate, and it is paid pro rata for shorter courses. Scholars also receive one economy airfare at the start and one at the end of the course, and the cost of the inbound visa and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Extra funding for academic development, fieldwork and family is available on a discretionary basis.
Who can apply?
- You are a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
- You are applying for a PhD (full-time or part-time), a full-time MLitt or an eligible full-time one-year postgraduate course at Cambridge.
- You have an outstanding academic record.
- You can show leadership potential and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
- Your chosen course is a good fit for your future plans.
Some courses are not eligible, including MASt courses, the MBA, Executive MBA, MFin and PGCE. Check the course list on the Gates Cambridge website before you apply.
The Gates Cambridge selection questions
Gates Cambridge no longer asks for one 500-word statement. In the funding section of the Cambridge application you answer four selection questions, one for each criterion: how you have displayed academic excellence (about 200 words, up to 1,400 characters); why you want to study this course at Cambridge and how it helps your future plans (about 200 words, up to 1,400 characters); how you have shown a commitment to improving the lives of others (about 300 words, up to 2,100 characters); and how you have shown a capacity for leadership (about 300 words, up to 2,100 characters). This is the only part of the form that asks directly about your fit for Gates Cambridge, so use real examples and do not repeat your CV. You also need a Gates Cambridge reference in addition to your two academic references. One of your academic referees may write it, as long as it speaks to the four criteria.
Documents you need
- The Cambridge postgraduate application, with the Gates Cambridge section completed
- Your answers to the four Gates Cambridge selection questions
- Two academic references and one Gates Cambridge reference
- Transcripts and degree certificates
- CV, and a research proposal for PhD applicants
- English language test results, if your course requires them
How Gates Cambridge selects scholars
The programme publishes four selection criteria:
- Outstanding intellectual ability.
- Reasons for your choice of course.
- A commitment to improving the lives of others.
- Leadership potential.
Departments first rank applicants on academic merit. Shortlisted candidates are then interviewed by panels.

How to apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, step by step
- Choose an eligible course at Cambridge and note its funding deadline.
- Start the Cambridge postgraduate application and select the Gates Cambridge option in the funding section.
- Write your Gates Cambridge statement.
- Brief your referees on the four criteria and ask them early.
- Submit by your deadline: 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 for most applicants.

There is one application. You do not apply to Gates Cambridge separately from your course.
Tips to strengthen your application
- Build your statement around the four criteria, with one clear example for each.
- Show the link from your past work to the Cambridge course and on to the change you want to make.
- Give evidence of leadership: what you started, who was involved and what changed.
- For a PhD, contact a potential supervisor before you apply.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating it as a purely academic award.
- Writing about leadership in general terms with no examples.
- Choosing a course that is not eligible.
- Missing the funding deadline for your course.
Is the Gates Cambridge Scholarship right for you?
It suits you if:
- your academic record is among the best in your class;
- you can show real work that improved other people’s lives, such as research, service or a project you led;
- you have a clear reason for choosing your Cambridge course;
- you are a citizen of a country outside the UK.
Look elsewhere if:
- your case rests on grades alone, with no record of leadership or service;
- you want a course that is not eligible, such as the MBA;
- you are a UK citizen, in which case see our Cambridge Trust page.
How to answer the Gates Cambridge selection questions
Your four answers are read alongside your course application. Each one should address its own criterion, not repeat your CV. One way to use the space:
- Academic excellence, about 200 words: one or two achievements that show how you think, such as a research result, a prize or a hard problem you solved.
- Why this course, about 200 words: how this Cambridge course links what you have done to what you plan to do next.
- Commitment to others, about 300 words: a specific thing you did, who benefited, what changed, why it matters to you and how it connects to your future plans.
- Leadership, about 300 words: a time you started a change or brought people together to reach a goal, and how that experience will help you make an impact later.
Write in plain language and give facts. Gates Cambridge says there is no right answer to these questions, so reflect on your own values and experience. Selectors read hundreds of applications, and concrete detail is what they remember. Keep each answer inside its character limit: 1,400 characters for the first two and 2,100 characters for the last two.
How to choose and brief your referees
Your academic referees support your course application, and a further reference speaks to your fit for the scholarship. Choose people who know your work closely and can give examples. Tell them the four criteria and send them your CV and a draft of your statement. Ask early, because references must be submitted through the Cambridge system by the deadline.
How to prepare for the interview
Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a panel. Expect questions on your subject, your reasons for the course and your record of leadership and service. To prepare:
- Reread your statement and research proposal, and be ready to defend each claim.
- Prepare a clear two-minute answer to why this course and why now.
- Have two examples ready for leadership and two for commitment to others.
- Practise explaining your research to someone outside your field.
Our scholarship interview tips explain how to structure answers.
A preparation plan
- Three months before your deadline: choose your course, check that it is eligible and contact a potential supervisor if you are applying for a PhD.
- Two months before: ask your referees, and draft your research proposal and statement.
- One month before: take an English test if your course requires one, and complete the Cambridge application form.
- Two weeks before: revise your statement against the four criteria and check that references are in progress.
- One week before: submit. The deadline is 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your course.
After you are selected for Gates Cambridge
Offers are made after the interviews. You then need to meet any remaining conditions of your Cambridge course offer, such as final transcripts or an English test, and accept the scholarship by the date given. Cambridge and the Gates Cambridge Trust guide you through the visa application. The scholarship pays your visa cost and the Immigration Health Surcharge, and your first airfare is covered. If you are not selected, your course application still continues, and Cambridge considers you for its other funding.
