How scholarships work in Sweden
Sweden charges tuition fees to students from outside the EU and EEA. Scholarships come from the Swedish Institute, which funds professionals from selected countries, and from the universities, whose awards usually cover tuition only. You apply for your master's programme first on the national admissions site, and for the scholarship in a separate step.

Studying in Sweden: what to know before you apply
Language
Swedish universities teach a large number of master’s programmes entirely in English, so you do not need Swedish to study. You will need to prove your English for admission, usually with a recognised test or an earlier degree taught in English. Learning some Swedish still helps with daily life and with finding part-time work.
How admission works
Sweden uses one national admissions website for most bachelor’s and master’s programmes. You rank the programmes you want in one application, upload your documents once and pay an application fee if you are from outside the EU and EEA. Scholarships are applied for separately, and most ask you to apply for admission first. Check both deadlines, because the scholarship date is not always the same as the admission date.
Costs
Students from outside the EU and EEA pay tuition fees, and the amount depends on the university and subject. A scholarship that covers tuition only still leaves your living costs, so plan for rent, food, transport and insurance. The Swedish Migration Agency asks residence permit applicants to show that they can support themselves, and it publishes the amount required each year.
Residence permit
If you are from outside the EU and EEA and will study for more than three months, you need a residence permit for studies. Apply as soon as you have been admitted and have paid your first tuition instalment or received your scholarship decision, because processing takes time.
Who these scholarships suit
The university scholarships on this page suit students with strong grades who can cover their own living costs. The Swedish Institute scholarship suits working professionals with leadership experience who plan to return home and use what they learn.
