Program Overview

The Knight-Wallace Fellowship gives experienced journalists an academic year at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, away from daily deadlines. Fellows work on their own journalism project, audit university courses, and join seminars, workshops and an international trip. Up to 19 fellows are chosen each year, and classes usually include up to six international fellows. Fellows receive a stipend of 85,000 US dollars, paid monthly from August to April, plus 5,000 US dollars for relocation, help finding housing and paid health insurance. Wallace House pays for course auditing and sponsors J-1 visas for international fellows, with J-2 visas for legal spouses and dependent children. The 2027-2028 fellowship starts in late August 2027. Applications are open, and the closing date for international applicants (anyone who is not a US citizen) is 1 December 2026. US citizens apply separately by 1 February 2027. You need at least five years of journalism experience and must currently work in journalism, for a news organisation or as an independent journalist. Public relations writers, lobbyists, advocates and people seeking a degree are not eligible. This page was last checked against the Wallace House website on 21 October 2026.
