Studying in Singapore: what to know before you apply

Language

English is the language of teaching and research at Singapore’s universities, and it is widely used in daily life. You will be asked to show your English level if your earlier degree was not taught in English.

How PhD funding works

Funded PhD places in Singapore are tied to research. You are admitted to a university department, matched with a supervisor and paid a monthly stipend while you work on your project. This is why your choice of supervisor and research area matters so much in the application. Strong bachelor’s graduates can often enter a PhD directly, without a master’s degree.

Costs

Singapore is an expensive city, and housing is the largest cost. Research scholarships pay tuition and a monthly stipend that is meant to cover living expenses. Ask the university about student housing early, because places are limited and private rent is high.

Student pass

International students need a Student’s Pass to study in Singapore. The university starts the process after you accept your offer, and you complete the remaining steps after you arrive. Follow the university’s instructions and keep to its dates.

Who these scholarships suit

The scholarships on this page are for research degrees, mainly the PhD, in science, engineering and related fields. They suit students with excellent grades, some research experience and a clear idea of the area they want to work in. If you want a taught master’s degree, funding in Singapore is much more limited.

Preparing a strong PhD application

Selection for research scholarships in Singapore looks at your academic record, any publications, your referees’ reports and how well you explain your research interests. List your thesis, projects and papers clearly in a research CV, choose referees who supervised your work, and practise describing your research plans in plain English for the interview. Applying early in the window gives your referees time to submit their reports.

Check the intake dates as well. Research scholarships in Singapore usually have two intakes a year, in August and in January, and each has its own application window.

How to choose between them

Start with the research, not the scholarship name. Look for supervisors whose work matches your background at each university and at the A*STAR research institutes, then apply for the award linked to that place.
