Program Overview

EDISS is the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Programme on the Engineering of Data-intensive Intelligent Software Systems. It trains software engineers to build systems where application development meets artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and big data analytics, including data pipelines, DataOps and experimentation systems. The programme lasts two years and includes a compulsory winter school. Students spend the first year at Åbo Akademi University in Finland. In the second year they specialise at Mälardalen University in Sweden (Industrial Software Engineering), the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain (Computer Vision and Intelligent Systems) or the University of L'Aquila in Italy (Model Driven Machine Learning – Software Engineering). Graduates receive a double degree: one from Åbo Akademi and one from their second-year university. Intake 7 starts in August 2027. Applications for the Erasmus Mundus and EDISS scholarships open on 16 November 2026 and close on 12 January 2027. A tuition fee waiver round follows from 25 February to 11 March 2027, and a self-funded round from 6 to 15 April 2027. You apply online through the Studyinfo.fi portal. For the 2026–2028 intake, the Erasmus Mundus scholarship covered the participation cost of 9,000 euros a year and paid 1,400 euros a month for 24 months, 51,600 euros in total, with health insurance. The EDISS scholarship covered the participation cost and paid 800 euros a month in the first year and 310 euros a month in the second. The figures for intake 7 are not yet published. You need a bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS in computer science, software engineering or an equivalent subject, with courses in programming, algorithms and data structures, computer architecture, networks, software engineering and mathematics, and English at IELTS Academic 6.5 (no part below 6) or TOEFL iBT 93.
