The Youth Changemakers Summit (YCS) 2026 is a four-day international youth leadership event in Budapest, Hungary, from 2 to 5 December 2026. It is organised by the Global Institute for Impactful Change (GIIC), a private organisation. It is a paid conference with a limited number of funded seats, not a scholarship or a study programme. This guide sets out what the organiser’s page shows, what each option costs and what to check before you pay anything. It was last checked against the organiser’s website on 4 October 2026.
Update: applications closed on 11 October 2026, and results are due on 25 October 2026. You can no longer apply. We keep this guide online because the checks below apply to any paid youth conference you may consider in future.
Key facts
- Dates: 2 to 5 December 2026
- Place: Budapest, Hungary
- Who can apply: all nationalities and academic fields, ages 16 to 48
- Application deadline: 11 October 2026 (closed)
- Results: 25 October 2026
- Funded seats: 30 fully funded and 40 partially funded
Participation categories and prices
The organiser’s page lists five categories, each with a price:
- Fully funded (30 seats): the page shows 14.99 US dollars next to this category. Selected delegates receive international airfare support, shared 4-star accommodation, meals at the forum, an invitation letter and access to all sessions.
- Partially funded (40 seats): also shown at 14.99 US dollars. It includes the same items except airfare, so you pay for your own flights.
- Invitation letter: 99 US dollars for an invitation letter and visa support documents, with an option to upgrade later.
- Summit access: 249 US dollars for guaranteed participation, with meals and sessions but no accommodation or flights.
- Self-funded: 599 US dollars for guaranteed participation with shared accommodation. You pay for your own flights.
Prices can change, so confirm them on the organiser’s page before you apply.
What to check before you apply
- The odds: only 30 seats are fully funded, and selection is competitive. Most applicants will not get one.
- The fee: the funded categories show a charge of 14.99 US dollars. Read the organiser’s payment and refund terms before you pay.
- The visa: an invitation letter does not guarantee a visa. Hungary is in the Schengen area, and the embassy decides on your application. Check the visa requirements, processing time and cost for your country first, because results come out on 25 October and the event starts on 2 December.
- Your real budget: unless you win a fully funded seat, add flights, visa fees, travel insurance and local costs to the category price.
- What it is worth to you: this is a short networking and leadership event. It does not give a degree, academic credit or study funding.
How to apply
- Read the full event details on the organiser’s page.
- Choose a participation category and check its price and what it includes.
- Applications closed on 11 October 2026.
- Wait for the result on 25 October 2026 before you book any travel.
How to judge any paid youth conference
Events like this one appear often, and they differ a lot in quality. Use the same seven questions for each one before you pay anything.
- Who organises it? A government, a university, a UN body or a private organisation? Private events can be good, but you should know who is behind them and how long they have been running.
- What exactly do you pay, and when? Look for an application fee, a participation fee and optional extras. Add them up.
- What is refunded if you cannot attend? Read the refund terms, especially for the case where your visa is refused.
- How many funded seats are there, compared with the number of applicants? If only a few dozen seats are funded, most applicants will be offered a paid option.
- What do you get? A programme with named speakers and sessions, or only general promises?
- Is there time for a visa? Count the days between the result and the event.
- What will it add to your plans? A short event gives contacts and motivation. It does not give a qualification.
The visa timing for this event
Results are due on 25 October 2026 and the summit starts on 2 December 2026. That leaves about five weeks. Hungary is in the Schengen area, so many applicants from outside Europe need a Schengen visa. Check the rule for your own passport. Embassies advise applying well ahead of travel, and decisions can take several weeks in busy periods. Before you apply to the summit, check three things with the embassy or visa centre that handles Hungarian visas for your country: how soon you can get an appointment, how long decisions currently take, and which documents are required. If you cannot get an appointment in time, a funded seat will not help you.
Work out your real cost
| Cost | Fully funded seat | Partially funded seat | Self-funded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee shown on the organiser’s page | 14.99 US dollars | 14.99 US dollars | 599 US dollars |
| Flights | Airfare support included | You pay | You pay |
| Accommodation during the summit | Included, shared | Included, shared | Included, shared |
| Visa fee, travel insurance, local transport, extra nights | You pay | You pay | You pay |
Ask the organiser in writing what "airfare support" means: a full ticket, a fixed amount or a refund after the event. Get the answer before you accept a seat.
Questions to send the organiser
- Is the 14.99 dollar charge refunded if I am not selected for a funded seat?
- If my visa is refused, which payments are refunded?
- Does airfare support cover the full ticket from my city, and is it booked for me or refunded later?
- When will I receive the invitation letter after selection?
- Can I see the full programme and the list of speakers?
A serious organiser answers these clearly. Keep the replies.
Free or funded alternatives to consider
If your goal is leadership experience and an international network, compare this summit with opportunities that do not charge participants. These three have pages on this site, and their details come from official sources.
- Global Leadership Challenge 2026: a five-day online programme from the University of Oxford and the St. Gallen Symposium for master’s and PhD students and young professionals aged 21 to 30. Applications close on 5 November 2026. The top three teams are invited to the St. Gallen Symposium with travel and accommodation covered.
- St. Gallen Global Ideas Competition 2027: for master’s and PhD students born in 1997 or later. The deadline is 1 February 2027, and the top 100 competitors attend the symposium with travel, board and lodging covered.
- MIT Solve 2027 Global Challenges: for people with a solution at prototype stage or later. The deadline is 2 November 2026, and each selected team receives a grant of 10,000 US dollars.
If you applied
- Save a copy of your form and any payment receipt.
- Do not book flights or pay for an upgrade until you have a result and a visa plan.
- If you are offered a paid category when you applied for a funded one, take time to decide. You are free to say no.
- Prepare your visa documents while you wait: passport, bank statements, a letter from your university or employer, and travel insurance.
What a short summit can and cannot give you
Be realistic about the return. A four-day event can give you a few useful contacts, practice in speaking to people from other countries, and energy to continue your own project. It cannot give you a qualification, a job or a place at a university. Certificates from short conferences carry little weight in scholarship selection, because panels look at what you have done over months and years. If you attend, set one clear goal in advance, such as finding two partners for a project or getting feedback on an idea, and follow up by e-mail within a week of returning home.
A simple way to decide
- Apply if you can afford the application charge, you have a clear goal for the event, and you can get a visa appointment in time.
- Accept a funded seat only after the organiser has confirmed in writing what is paid, and you have checked the visa timing.
- Think carefully about a paid category. Compare the full cost, including flights and the visa, with what the same money could do for your studies, such as a language test or application fees.
- Do not apply if you would need to borrow money to attend.
Warning signs in paid youth events
Many international youth events are well run. Some are mainly a way to collect fees. These signs suggest you should be careful:
- Every applicant is “selected”, but most are offered a paid category instead of the funded seat they applied for.
- Fees are split into many small payments, such as an application fee, a confirmation fee and a visa letter fee, so the total is hard to see.
- The refund policy is missing or vague, especially for a refused visa.
- The programme has no named speakers or no detailed schedule, only general words like “world leaders” or “global experts”.
- You are pushed to pay quickly, with messages such as “only two seats left”.
- The organiser is hard to identify: no registered address, no named team, or a very new website.
One sign on its own does not prove that an event is bad. Several together are a reason to stop and ask questions before you pay.
Signs of a well-run event
- A clear, complete price list, with the total cost for each category.
- A written refund policy that covers visa refusal.
- A published programme with named speakers and sessions.
- An organiser with a public record of past events, photos and reports.
- Funded seats that are clearly separate from paid seats, with the number of each stated.
- Enough time between results and the event for a visa.
What an invitation letter is, and what it is not
An invitation letter is a document from the organiser that confirms you are invited to the event, with its dates and place. Embassies may ask for it as part of a visa application. It is not a visa, and it does not mean the embassy will approve your application. The embassy looks at your whole file: your purpose of travel, your finances, your ties to your home country and your travel history. Paying for an invitation letter alone, without a funded seat, means you still pay all other costs yourself.
Schengen visa basics for a short event
Hungary is in the Schengen area. If your passport needs a visa for Schengen countries, you apply for a short-stay visa at the Hungarian embassy or consulate, or its visa centre, in the country where you live. Some general rules from the EU visa code:
- You can apply up to six months before your trip, and no later than 15 days before it.
- Embassies normally decide within 15 days, but this can be extended in some cases.
- You need travel medical insurance with cover of at least 30,000 euros for the whole stay.
- You usually need proof of accommodation, proof of funds and a return travel plan.
Check the current fee and document list on the official website of the embassy or visa centre for your country, and book an appointment as soon as you know you will travel.
How to list a conference on your CV
If you attend, describe it honestly. Write the event name, the place, the dates and what you actually did there, such as presenting a project or taking part in a workshop. Do not call a paid place an “award” or a “scholarship”, and do not describe yourself as “selected” if you paid for guaranteed participation. Scholarship panels check details, and an honest, modest entry is better than one that is overstated.
If you are not selected, or decide not to go
A short paid event is not the only way to build leadership experience. Free or funded options on this site include the Global Leadership Challenge 2026, which closes on 5 November 2026, the St. Gallen Global Ideas Competition, which closes on 1 February 2027, and MIT Solve, which closes on 2 November 2026. Long-term activities in your own community, such as running a project, volunteering or leading a student group, often count for more in scholarship applications than a single event.
Before you pay for any event, ask yourself
- What exactly do I want from this event, and can I get it in a cheaper way?
- What is the total cost, including flights, visa, insurance and extra nights?
- What happens to my money if my visa is refused or the event is cancelled?
- Would the same money do more for my goals if I spent it on a language test, application fees or a course?
- Do I know anyone who attended a past edition, and what did they say?
If you cannot answer these clearly, wait. Good opportunities come every year, and there is no need to rush into a payment you are unsure about.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if the result arrives late?
Do not pay for flights or an upgrade until you have the result in writing and a confirmed visa appointment. If there is no longer time for a visa, it is better to withdraw than to lose money on travel.
Is the Youth Changemakers Summit a scholarship?
No. It is a short paid conference with a limited number of funded seats. It does not fund a degree.
Is it free to apply?
The organiser’s page showed a charge of 14.99 US dollars next to the funded categories when we checked on 4 October 2026. Confirm the current amount and the refund terms on the organiser’s page.
Does an invitation letter guarantee a visa?
No. The embassy decides each application on its own rules.
Will this help my scholarship applications?
A conference can give you contacts and something to talk about, but selection panels give far more weight to your studies, your work and your long-term activities.
Is this website connected to the organiser?
No. This guide only summarises what the organiser’s page shows, so that you can decide with full information.
Can I still apply for the Youth Changemakers Summit 2026?
No. Applications closed on 11 October 2026. Results are due on 25 October 2026.
How long does a Schengen visa take?
Embassies normally decide within 15 days, and the decision can take longer in some cases. You can apply up to six months before your trip, so apply as early as you can.
Does a certificate from a summit help scholarship applications?
Very little on its own. Panels give much more weight to what you have done over months and years, such as your studies, work and long-term projects.
Is travel insurance required for a Schengen visa?
Yes, for applicants who need a visa. The EU visa code asks for travel medical insurance with cover of at least 30,000 euros for the whole stay.
Looking for study funding instead?
If your goal is a degree or a research placement, see our list of active scholarships, which covers government and university programmes that fund tuition and living costs.
